Nanny rates in Cape Town (2026 guide)

Hiring a nanny directly? Here is what to know about pay, UIF and contracts in South Africa in 2026, plus how agency babysitting differs.

The legal minimum

From 1 March 2026 the minimum wage for domestic workers, including nannies, is R30.23 per hour — the same as the national minimum wage. A worker who works 4 hours or less on a day must still be paid for at least 4 hours (R120.92).

These figures are reported by the Labour Guide (labourguide.co.za). Always check the current figures with the Department of Employment and Labour, as they are updated every March.

What families typically pay

Many families pay well above the minimum, depending on experience, the number and ages of children, extra duties, driving and live-in arrangements. On the Babysits marketplace, Cape Town babysitters ask around R60–R75 per hour on average (self-reported by sitters on that site).

Agency babysitting costs more than hiring someone privately because it includes vetting, matching, replacement cover, secure payment and support.

UIF and contracts

Agency or private hire?

If you need occasional babysitting, a holiday nanny or someone at short notice, an agency handles vetting, matching and payment for you. For a long-term nanny you employ directly, you take on the employer responsibilities above — or use an agency placement to find and vet the right person.
